God's prophecy that Ishmael would also become a great nation. The seed of Ishmael, along with all other nations, must today put faith in Christ to continue alive.
Genesis 21:5-21 GW ...Abraham was 100 years old when his son Isaac was born. (6) Sarah said, "God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me. (7) Who would have predicted to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet, I have given him a son in his old age." (8) The child grew and was weaned. On the day Isaac was weaned, Abraham held a big feast. (9) Sarah saw that Abraham's son by Hagar the Egyptian was laughing at Isaac. (10) She said to Abraham, "Get rid of this slave and her son, because this slave's son must never share the inheritance with my son Isaac." (11) Abraham was upset by this because of his son Ishmael. (12) But God said to Abraham, "Don't be upset about the boy and your slave. Listen to what Sarah says because through Isaac your descendants will carry on your name. (13) Besides, I will make the slave's son into a nation also, because he is your child." (14) Early the next morning Abraham took bread and a container of water and gave them to Hagar, putting them on her shoulder. He also gave her the boy and sent her on her way. So she left and wandered around in the desert near Beersheba. (15) When the water in the container was gone, she put the boy under one of the bushes. (16) Then she went about as far away as an arrow can be shot and sat down. She said to herself, "I don't want to watch the boy die." So she sat down and sobbed loudly. (17) God heard the boy crying, and the Messenger of God called to Hagar from heaven. "What's the matter, Hagar?" he asked her. "Don't be afraid! God has heard the boy crying from the bushes. (18) Come on, help the boy up! Take him by the hand, because I'm going to make him into a great nation." (19) God opened her eyes. Then she saw a well. She filled the container with water and gave the boy a drink. (20) God was with the boy as he grew up. He lived in the desert and became a skilled archer. (21) He lived in the desert of Paran, and his mother got him a wife from Egypt.
Genesis 21:5-21 ESV ...Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him. (6) And Sarah said, "God has made laughter for me; everyone who hears will laugh over [with] me." (7) And she said, "Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age." (8) And the child grew and was weaned. And Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned. (9) But Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, laughing [at Isaac]. (10) So she said to Abraham, "Cast out this slave woman with her son, for the son of this slave woman shall not be heir with my son Isaac." (11) And the thing was very displeasing to Abraham on account of his son. (12) But God said to Abraham, "Be not displeased because of the boy and because of your slave woman. Whatever Sarah says to you, do as she tells you, for through Isaac shall your offspring be named. (13) And I will make a nation of the son of the slave woman also, because he is your offspring." (14) So Abraham rose early in the morning and took bread and a skin of water and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, along with the child, and sent her away. And she departed and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba. (15) When the water in the skin was gone, she put the child under one of the bushes. (16) Then she went and sat down opposite him a good way off, about the distance of a bowshot, for she said, "Let me not look on the death of the child." And as she sat opposite him, she lifted up her voice and wept. (17) And God heard the voice of the boy, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, "What troubles you, Hagar? Fear not, for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is. (18) Up! Lift up the boy, and hold him fast with your hand, for I will make him into a great nation." (19) Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. And she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink. (20) And God was with the boy, and he grew up. He lived in the wilderness and became an expert with the bow. (21) He lived in the wilderness of Paran, and his mother took a wife for him from the land of Egypt.
Genesis 21:5-21 GNB ...Abraham was a hundred years old when Isaac was born. (6) Sarah said, "God has brought me joy and laughter. Everyone who hears about it will laugh with me." (7) Then she added, "Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age." (8) The child grew, and on the day that he was weaned, Abraham gave a great feast. (9) One day Ishmael, whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham, was playing with [hurtfully teasing] Sarah's son Isaac. (10) Sarah saw them and said to Abraham, "Send this slave and her son away. The son of this woman must not get any part of your wealth, which my son Isaac should inherit." (11) This troubled Abraham very much, because Ishmael also was his son. (12) But God said to Abraham, "Don't be worried about the boy and your slave Hagar. Do whatever Sarah tells you, because it is through Isaac that you will have the descendants I have promised. (13) I will also give many children to the son of the slave woman, so that they will become a nation. He too is your son." (14) Early the next morning Abraham gave Hagar some food and a leather bag full of water. He put the child on her back and sent her away. She left and wandered about in the wilderness of Beersheba. (15) When the water was all gone, she left the child under a bush (16) and sat down about a hundred yards away. She said to herself, "I can't bear to see my child die." While she was sitting there, she began to cry. (17) God heard the boy crying, and from heaven the angel of God spoke to Hagar, "What are you troubled about, Hagar? Don't be afraid. God has heard the boy crying. (18) Get up, go and pick him up, and comfort him. I will make a great nation out of his descendants." (19) Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well. She went and filled the leather bag with water and gave some to the boy. (20) God was with the boy as he grew up; he lived in the wilderness of Paran and became a skillful hunter. (21) His mother got an Egyptian wife for him.
Genesis 21:5-21 NWT ...And Abraham was a hundred years old when Isaac his son was born to him. 6 Then Sarah said: “God has prepared laughter for me: everybody hearing of it will laugh at me.” 7 And she added: “Who would have uttered to Abraham, ‘Sarah will certainly suckle children,’ whereas I have given birth to a son in his old age?” 8 Now the child kept growing and came to be weaned; and Abraham then prepared a big feast on the day of Isaac’s being weaned. 9 And Sarah kept noticing the son of Ha´gar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, poking fun. 10 So she began to say to Abraham: “Drive out this slave girl and her son, for the son of this slave girl is not going to be an heir with my son, with Isaac!” 11 But the thing proved to be very displeasing to Abraham as regards his son. 12 Then God said to Abraham: “Do not let anything that Sarah keeps saying to you be displeasing to you about the boy and about your slave girl. Listen to her voice, because it is by means of Isaac that what will be called your seed will be. 13 And as for the son of the slave girl, I shall also constitute him a nation, because he is your offspring.” 14 So Abraham got up early in the morning and took bread and a skin water bottle and gave it to Ha´gar, setting it upon her shoulder, and the child, and then dismissed her. And she went her way and wandered about in the wilderness of Be´er-she´ba. 15 Finally the water became exhausted in the skin bottle and she threw the child under one of the bushes. 16 Then she went on and sat down by herself, about the distance of a bowshot away, because she said: “Let me not see it when the child dies.” So she sat down at a distance and began to raise her voice and weep. 17 At that God heard the voice of the boy, and God’s angel called to Ha´gar out of the heavens and said to her: “What is the matter with you, Ha´gar? Do not be afraid, because God has listened to the voice of the boy there where he is. 18 Get up, lift up the boy and take hold of him with your hand, because I shall constitute him a great nation.” 19 Then God opened her eyes so that she caught sight of a well of water; and she went and began to fill the skin bottle with water and to give the boy a drink. 20 And God continued to be with the boy, and he kept growing and dwelling in the wilderness; and he became an archer. 21 And he took up dwelling in the wilderness of Pa´ran, and his mother proceeded to take a wife for him from the land of Egypt.
