Numbers 13:17-14:35 GNB When Moses sent them out, he said to them, "Go north from here into the southern part of the land of Canaan and then on into the hill country. (18) Find out what kind of country it is, how many people live there, and how strong they are. (19) Find out whether the land is good or bad and whether the people live in open towns or in fortified cities. (20) Find out whether the soil is fertile and whether the land is wooded. And be sure to bring back some of the fruit that grows there." (It was the season when grapes were beginning to ripen.) (21) So the men went north and explored the land from the wilderness of Zin in the south all the way to Rehob, near Hamath Pass in the north. (22) They went first into the southern part of the land and came to Hebron, where the clans of Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the descendants of a race of giants called the Anakim, lived. (Hebron was founded seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) (23) They came to Eshcol Valley, and there they cut off a branch which had one bunch of grapes on it so heavy that it took two men to carry it on a pole between them. They also brought back some pomegranates and figs. (24) (That place was named Eshcol Valley because of the bunch of grapes the Israelites cut off there.) (25) After exploring the land for forty days, the spies returned (26) to Moses, Aaron, and the whole community of Israel at Kadesh in the wilderness of Paran. They reported what they had seen and showed them the fruit they had brought. (27) They told Moses, "We explored the land and found it to be rich and fertile; and here is some of its fruit. (28) But the people who live there are powerful, and their cities are very large and well fortified. Even worse, we saw the descendants of the giants there. (29) Amalekites live in the southern part of the land; Hittites, Jebusites, and Amorites live in the hill country; and Canaanites live by the Mediterranean Sea and along the Jordan River." (30) Caleb silenced the people who were complaining against Moses, and said, "We should attack now and take the land; we are strong enough to conquer it." (31) But the men who had gone with Caleb said, "No, we are not strong enough to attack them; the people there are more powerful than we are." (32) So they spread a false report among the Israelites about the land they had explored. They said, "That land doesn't even produce enough to feed the people who live there. Everyone we saw was very tall, (33) and we even saw giants there, the descendants of Anak. We felt as small as grasshoppers, and that is how we must have looked to them."
Numbers 14:1-34 GNB All night long the people cried out in distress. (2) They complained against Moses and Aaron, and said, "It would have been better to die in Egypt or even here in the wilderness! (3) Why is the LORD  (  יהוה  )   taking us into that land? We will be killed in battle, and our wives and children will be captured. Wouldn't it be better to go back to Egypt?" (4) So they said to one another, "Let's choose a leader and go back to Egypt!" (5) Then Moses and Aaron bowed to the ground in front of all the people. (6) And Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, two of the spies, tore their clothes in sorrow (7) and said to the people, "The land we explored is an excellent land. (8) If the LORD  (  יהוה  )   is pleased with us, he will take us there and give us that rich and fertile land. (9) Do not rebel against the LORD  (  יהוה  )   and don't be afraid of the people who live there. We will conquer them easily. The LORD  (  יהוה  )   is with us and has defeated the gods who protected them; so don't be afraid." (10) The whole community was threatening to stone them to death, but suddenly the people saw the dazzling light of the LORD  (  יהוה  )   's presence appear over the Tent. (11) The LORD  (  יהוה  )   said to Moses, "How much longer will these people reject me? How much longer will they refuse to trust in me, even though I have performed so many miracles among them? (12) I will send an epidemic and destroy them, but I will make you the father of a nation that is larger and more powerful than they are!" (13) But Moses said to the LORD  (  יהוה  )   , "You brought these people out of Egypt by your power. When the Egyptians hear what you have done to your people, (14) they will tell it to the people who live in this land. These people have already heard that you, LORD  (  יהוה  )   , are with us, that you appear in plain sight when your cloud stops over us, and that you go before us in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. (15) Now if you kill all your people, the nations who have heard of your fame will say (16) that you killed your people in the wilderness because you were not able to bring them into the land you promised to give them. (17) So now, LORD  (  יהוה  )   , I pray, show us your power and do what you promised when you said, (18) 'I, the LORD  (  יהוה  )   , am not easily angered, and I show great love and faithfulness and forgive sin and rebellion. Yet I will not fail to punish children and grandchildren to the third and fourth generation for the sins of their parents.' (19) And now, LORD  (  יהוה  )   , according to the greatness of your unchanging love, forgive, I pray, the sin of these people, just as you have forgiven them ever since they left Egypt." (20) The LORD  (  יהוה  )   answered, "I will forgive them, as you have asked. (21) But I promise that as surely as I live and as surely as my presence fills the earth, (22) none of these people will live to enter that land. They have seen the dazzling light of my presence and the miracles that I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness, but they have tried my patience over and over again and have refused to obey me. (23) They will never enter the land which I promised to their ancestors. None of those who have rejected me will ever enter it. (24) But because my servant Caleb has a different attitude and has remained loyal to me, I will bring him into the land which he explored, and his descendants will possess the land (25) in whose valleys the Amalekites and the Canaanites now live. Turn back tomorrow and go into the wilderness in the direction of the Gulf of Aqaba." (26) The LORD  (  יהוה  )   said to Moses and Aaron, (27) "How much longer are these wicked people going to complain against me? I have heard enough of these complaints! (28) Now give them this answer: 'I swear that as surely as I live, I will do to you just what you have asked. I, the LORD  (  יהוה  )   , have spoken. (29) You will die and your corpses will be scattered across this wilderness. Because you have complained against me, none of you over twenty years of age will enter that land. (30) I promised to let you live there, but not one of you will, except Caleb and Joshua. (31) You said that your children would be captured, but I will bring them into the land that you rejected, and it will be their home. (32) You will die here in this wilderness. (33) Your children will wander in the wilderness for forty years, suffering for your unfaithfulness, until the last one of you dies. (34) You will suffer the consequences of your sin for forty years, one year for each of the forty days you spent exploring the land. You will know what it means to have me against you! (35) I swear that I will do this to you wicked people who have gathered together against me. Here in the wilderness every one of you will die. I, the LORD  (  יהוה  )   , have spoken.' "

Numbers 13:17-14:35 ESV Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan and said to them, "Go up into the Negeb and go up into the hill country, (18) and see what the land is, and whether the people who dwell in it are strong or weak, whether they are few or many, (19) and whether the land that they dwell in is good or bad, and whether the cities that they dwell in are camps or strongholds, (20) and whether the land is rich or poor, and whether there are trees in it or not. Be of good courage and bring some of the fruit of the land." Now the time was the season of the first ripe grapes. (21) So they went up and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob, near Lebo-hamath. (22) They went up into the Negeb and came to Hebron. Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the descendants of Anak, were there. (Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) (23) And they came to the Valley of Eshcol and cut down from there a branch with a single cluster of grapes, and they carried it on a pole between two of them; they also brought some pomegranates and figs. (24) That place was called the Valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster that the people of Israel cut down from there. (25) At the end of forty days they returned from spying out the land. (26) And they came to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation of the people of Israel in the wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh. They brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. (27) And they told him, "We came to the land to which you sent us. It flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. (28) However, the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. And besides, we saw the descendants of Anak there. (29) The Amalekites dwell in the land of the Negeb. The Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the hill country. And the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and along the Jordan." (30) But Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, "Let us go up at once and occupy it, for we are well able to overcome it." (31) Then the men who had gone up with him said, "We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we are." (32) So they brought to the people of Israel a bad report of the land that they had spied out, saying, "The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people that we saw in it are of great height. (33) And there we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim), and we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them."
Numbers 14:1-35 ESV Then all the congregation raised a loud cry, and the people wept that night. (2) And all the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron. The whole congregation said to them, "Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or would that we had died in this wilderness! (3) Why is the LORD  (  יהוה  )   bringing us into this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will become a prey. Would it not be better for us to go back to Egypt?" (4) And they said to one another, "Let us choose a leader and go back to Egypt." (5) Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the people of Israel. (6) And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes (7) and said to all the congregation of the people of Israel, "The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceedingly good land. (8) If the LORD  (  יהוה  )   delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land that flows with milk and honey. (9) Only do not rebel against the LORD  (  יהוה  )   . And do not fear the people of the land, for they are bread for us. Their protection is removed from them, and the LORD  (  יהוה  )   is with us; do not fear them." (10) Then all the congregation said to stone them with stones. But the glory of the LORD  (  יהוה  )   appeared at the tent of meeting to all the people of Israel. (11) And the LORD  (  יהוה  )   said to Moses, "How long will this people despise me? And how long will they not believe in me, in spite of all the signs that I have done among them? (12) I will strike them with the pestilence and disinherit them, and I will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they." (13) But Moses said to the LORD  (  יהוה  )   , "Then the Egyptians will hear of it, for you brought up this people in your might from among them, (14) and they will tell the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that you, O LORD  (  יהוה  )   , are in the midst of this people. For you, O LORD  (  יהוה  )   , are seen face to face, and your cloud stands over them and you go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night. (15) Now if you kill this people as one man, then the nations who have heard your fame will say, (16) 'It is because the LORD  (  יהוה  )   was not able to bring this people into the land that he swore to give to them that he has killed them in the wilderness.' (17) And now, please let the power of the LORD  (  יהוה  )   be great as you have promised, saying, (18) 'The LORD  (  יהוה  )   is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, to the third and the fourth generation.' (19) Please pardon the iniquity of this people, according to the greatness of your steadfast love, just as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt until now." (20) Then the LORD  (  יהוה  )   said, "I have pardoned, according to your word. (21) But truly, as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD  (  יהוה  )   , (22) none of the men who have seen my glory and my signs that I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and yet have put me to the test these ten times and have not obeyed my voice, (23) shall see the land that I swore to give to their fathers. And none of those who despised me shall see it. (24) But my servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit and has followed me fully, I will bring into the land into which he went, and his descendants shall possess it. (25) Now, since the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwell in the valleys, turn tomorrow and set out for the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea." (26) And the LORD  (  יהוה  )   spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, (27) "How long shall this wicked congregation grumble against me? I have heard the grumblings of the people of Israel, which they grumble against me. (28) Say to them, 'As I live, declares the LORD  (  יהוה  )   , what you have said in my hearing I will do to you: (29) your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness, and of all your number, listed in the census from twenty years old and upward, who have grumbled against me, (30) not one shall come into the land where I swore that I would make you dwell, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun. (31) But your little ones, who you said would become a prey, I will bring in, and they shall know the land that you have rejected. (32) But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness. (33) And your children shall be shepherds in the wilderness forty years and shall suffer for your faithlessness, until the last of your dead bodies lies in the wilderness. (34) According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, forty days, a year for each day, you shall bear your iniquity forty years, and you shall know my displeasure.' (35) I, the LORD  (  יהוה  )   , have spoken. Surely this will I do to all this wicked congregation who are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall come to a full end, and there they shall die." Numbers 13:17-14:35 NWT 17 When Moses was sending them to spy out the land of Ca´naan, he proceeded to say to them: “Go up here into the Neg´eb, and YOU must go up into the mountainous region. 18 And YOU must see what the land is and the people who are dwelling on it, whether they are strong or weak, whether they are few or many; 19 and what the land is in which they are dwelling, whether it is good or bad, and what the cities are in which they are dwelling, whether it is in encampments or in fortifications; 20 and what the land is, whether it is fat or lean, whether there are trees in it or not. And YOU must show yourselves courageous and take some of the fruitage of the land.” Now the days were the days of the first ripe fruits of the grapes. 21 So they went up and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin to Re´hob to the entering in of Ha´math. 22 When they went up into the Neg´eb, they then came to He´bron. Now A·hi´man, She´shai and Tal´mai, those born of A´nak, were there. Incidentally, He´bron had been built seven years before Zo´an of Egypt. 23 When they came to the torrent valley of Esh´col, they then proceeded to cut down from there a shoot with one cluster of grapes. And they went carrying it with a bar on two of the men, and also some of the pomegranates and some of the figs. 24 They called that place the torrent valley of Esh´col, on account of the cluster that the sons of Israel cut down from there. 25 Finally at the end of forty days they returned from spying out the land. 26 So they walked and came to Moses and Aaron and all the assembly of the sons of Israel in the wilderness of Pa´ran, at Ka´desh. And they came bringing back word to them and all the assembly and showing them the fruitage of the land. 27 And they went on to report to him and say: “We entered into the land to which you sent us out, and it is indeed flowing with milk and honey, and this is its fruitage. 28 Nevertheless, the facts are that the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the fortified cities are very great; and, too, those born of A´nak we saw there. 29 The A·mal´ek·ites are dwelling in the land of the Neg´eb, and the Hit´tites and the Jeb´u·sites and the Am´or·ites are dwelling in the mountainous region, and the Ca´naan·ites are dwelling by the sea and by the side of the Jordan.” 30 Then Ca´leb tried to still the people toward Moses and went on to say: “Let us go up directly, and we are bound to take possession of it, because we can surely prevail over it.” 31 But the men who went up with him said: “We are not able to go up against the people, because they are stronger than we are.” 32 And they kept on bringing forth to the sons of Israel a bad report of the land that they had spied out, saying: “The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is a land that eats up its inhabitants; and all the people whom we saw in the midst of it are men of extraordinary size. 33 And there we saw the Neph´i·lim, the sons of A´nak, who are from the Neph´i·lim; so that we became in our own eyes like grasshoppers, and the same way we became in their eyes.” 14 Then all the assembly raised their voice, and the people continued giving vent to their voice and weeping all through that night. 2 And all the sons of Israel began to murmur against Moses and Aaron, and all the assembly began to say against them: “If only we had died in the land of Egypt, or if only we had died in this wilderness! 3 And why is Jehovah  ( יהוה )  bringing us to this land to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will become plunder. Is it not better for us to return to Egypt?” 4 They even went to saying to one another: “Let us appoint a head, and let us return to Egypt!” 5 At this Moses and Aaron fell upon their faces before all the congregation of the assembly of the sons of Israel. 6 And Joshua the son of Nun and Ca´leb the son of Je·phun´neh, who were of those who spied out the land, ripped their garments apart, 7 and they proceeded to say this to all the assembly of the sons of Israel: “The land that we passed through to spy it out is a very, very good land. 8 If Jehovah  ( יהוה )  has found delight in us, then he will certainly bring us into this land and give it to us, a land that is flowing with milk and honey. 9 Only against Jehovah  ( יהוה )  do not rebel; and YOU, do not YOU fear the people of the land, for they are bread to us. Their shelter has turned away from over them, and Jehovah  ( יהוה )  is with us. Do not fear them.” 10 However, all the assembly talked of pelting them with stones. And Jehovah  ( יהוה )  ’s glory appeared on the tent of meeting to all the sons of Israel. 11 Finally Jehovah  ( יהוה )  said to Moses: “How long will this people treat me without respect, and how long will they not put faith in me for all the signs that I performed in among them? 12 Let me strike them with pestilence and drive them away, and let me make you a nation greater and mightier than they are.” 13 But Moses said to Jehovah  ( יהוה )  : “Then the Egyptians will be bound to hear that you by your power have led this people up out of their midst. 14 And they will be bound to tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that you are Jehovah  ( יהוה )  in among this people, who has appeared face to face. You are Jehovah  ( יהוה )  , and your cloud is standing over them, and you are going before them in the pillar of cloud by day and in the pillar of fire by night. 15 Were you to put this people to death as one man, then the nations who have heard of your fame would certainly say this, 16 ‘Because of Jehovah  ( יהוה )  ’s not being able to bring this people into the land about which he swore to them he proceeded to slaughter them in the wilderness.’ 17 And now, please, let your power become great, O Jehovah  ( יהוה )  , just as you have spoken, saying, 18 ‘ Jehovah  ( יהוה )  , slow to anger and abundant in loving-kindness, pardoning error and transgression, but by no means will he give exemption from punishment, bringing punishment for the error of the fathers upon sons, upon the third generation and upon the fourth generation.’ 19 Forgive, please, the error of this people according to the greatness of your loving-kindness, and just as you have pardoned this people from Egypt onward until now.” 20 Then Jehovah  ( יהוה )  said: “I do forgive according to your word. 21 And, on the other hand, as I live, all the earth will be filled with the glory of Jehovah  ( יהוה )  . 22 But all the men who have been seeing my glory and my signs that I have performed in Egypt and in the wilderness and yet kept testing me these ten times, and have not listened to my voice, 23 will never see the land about which I swore to their fathers, yes, all those treating me without respect will not see it. 24 As for my servant Ca´leb, because a different spirit has proved to be with him and he kept following wholly after me, I shall certainly bring him into the land where he has gone, and his offspring will take possession of it. 25 While the A·mal´ek·ites and the Ca´naan·ites are dwelling in the low plain, YOU people make a turn tomorrow and pull away to march to the wilderness by way of the Red Sea.” 26 And Jehovah  ( יהוה )  went on to speak to Moses and Aaron, saying: 27 “How long will this evil assembly have this murmuring that they are carrying on against me? I have heard the murmurings of the sons of Israel that they are murmuring against me. 28 Say to them, ‘“As I live,” is the utterance of Jehovah  ( יהוה )  , “if I shall not do to YOU just that way as YOU have spoken in my ears! 29 In this wilderness YOUR carcasses will fall, yes, all YOUR registered ones of all YOUR number from twenty years old upward, YOU who have murmured against me. 30 As for YOU, YOU will not enter into the land in which I lifted up my hand [in oath] to reside with YOU, except Ca´leb the son of Je·phun´neh and Joshua the son of Nun. 31 “‘“And YOUR little ones who YOU said would become plunder, these also I shall certainly bring in, and they will indeed know the land that YOU have rejected. 32 But the carcasses of YOU yourselves will fall in this wilderness. 33 And YOUR sons will become shepherds in the wilderness forty years, and they will have to answer for YOUR acts of fornication, until YOUR carcasses come to their end in the wilderness. 34 By the number of the days that YOU spied out the land, forty days, a day for a year, a day for a year, YOU will answer for YOUR errors forty years, as YOU must know what my being estranged means. 35 “‘“I Jehovah  ( יהוה )  have spoken if this is not what I shall do to all this evil assembly, those who have gathered together against me: In this wilderness they will come to their end, and there they will die.
