Did Jesus Christ come to bring peace to the earth? That question is one that needs to be answered with regard to when a person has lived in mankind's Bible recorded history. The answer in the long term is of course yes, but with a warning.

The Bible calls Jesus the "prince of peace" (Isaiah 9:6-7) and Jesus himself said: Happy are the peace makers, for they will be called sons of God. (Matthew 5:9) It is very plain that Jesus, as the "Prince of Peace," came for the very purpose of bringing peace to the earth. (And yes, for other reasons as well!)

With that said, we should also consider the warning Jesus gave which at first glance might seem contradictory. Regarding peace, Jesus Christ himself said: "You should not suppose that I came to put peace on the earth; I did not come to put peace, but a sword." (Matthew 10-34) Why then would our Lord, our King and our Peacemaker, this "prince of peace," why would he say he came "not to bring peace but a sword?" If we read the verses surrounding Matthew 5:9 and those surrounding Matthew 10:34, we get a better understanding. Very importantly also; We perceive this is not a contradiction but a step in the process of bringing peace. Up until the point in time when the kingdom of Christ destroys Jehovah's enemies,* those who strive to be followers of Christ Jesus should not expect that everyone is going to love them for their decision. *(Isaiah 34:8) (Isaiah 2:2-4) (Acts 17:31) (Daniel 2:44) (Psalms 37:11) Others who love the "Truth" defined by the Bible, and who are thus lovers of Jehovah and Christ Jesus, will of course love all who share their love of God's Word. Those who perceive the hope of the Christ as foolishness (1 Corinthians 1:18) however, will hate those who express faith; Even if they are family members. (Proverbs 29:27) The very expression and example of faith in Christ Jesus provides a witness against those who do not share that faith, and pricks their conscience. "Doegs" will always hate the "noble minded." (Proverbs 29:27) For that reason, they will not be kind to Christians. Jesus said it! (John 15:17-24) Jesus will bring about peace when and with the establishment of the kingdom which his Father has given him. (Acts 17:31) (Daniel 2:44) Christ will sit forever upon the throne of his forefather: King David.* (Isaiah 9:7) We may be favored to be the generation to witness the establishment of that kingdom, and to be among those who will never have to die at all. (John 11:26) That is when Christ establishes peace throughout creation. Bible prophecy seems to indicate it is happening before our eyes!

*Where will Christ sit on the throne of King David, in heaven or on earth? As you study the Bible, be careful not to get caught up in putting faith in Dogma's (religious doctrine). There are scriptures that seem to support both the idea that Jesus will reside on earth, and some that seem to indicate he will reside in heaven. It is imperative never to assert something the Bible doesn't clearly teach. (1 Corinthians 4:6) Always remember: There is no reason to fight over something that doesn't impact your hope. Does it matter to you if Christ resides in the earth or in the heavens? Which ever God chooses, isn't that right? If someone teaches Jesus isn't the Christ you see, that impacts your hope and you need to assert what is true. Jesus is the Christ, the Bible very clearly teaches that! There are many people who will try and derail your search for truth by involving you in worrying about dogma's. Once they get caught up in supporting and defending their organization's dogma's, they are lost to the man of lawlessness. Build your faith on what the Bible clearly does say, and dogma's will never be a concern to you. If the Bible doesn't clearly teach something, each is free to believe as he or she wishes; For only that person will defend their faith before the judgment seat of Christ. If your faith is built only upon what the Bible does teach, you will be successful in your defense.
