1 Corinthians 1:21-2:10 MWT (21) For God in his wisdom made it impossible for people to know him by means of their own wisdom. Instead, by Christ's message that is called "foolish" by this world, God decided to save those who believe. (22) Jews want miracles for proof, and Greeks look for wisdom. (23) As for us, we proclaim the Christ crucified, a message that is offensive to the Jews and nonsense to the Gentiles; (24) but for those whom God has called, (John 6:44) both Jews and Gentiles, this message is from Christ, who is the power of God and the wisdom of God. (25) For what some view as God's foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and what they consider God's weakness is stronger than human strength. (26) Now remember what you were, my friends, when God called you. From the human point of view, few of you were wise or powerful or of high social standing. (27) God purposely chose what the world considers nonsense in order to shame the wise, and he chose what the world considers weak in order to shame the powerful. (28) He chose what the world looks down on and despises and thinks is nothing, in order to destroy what the world thinks is important. (29) This is so no one can boast in God's presence. (30) But God has brought you into union with Christ Jesus, and God has made Christ to be our wisdom. By him we are put right with God; we become God's holy people and are set free. (31) So then, as the scripture says, "Whoever wants to boast must boast of what Almighty God has done."
1 Corinthians 2:1-10 MWT (1) When I came to you, my friends, to preach God's secret truth, I did not use big words and great learning. (2) For while I was with you, I made up my mind to forget everything except Jesus Christ and especially his death on the cross [or stake]. (3) So when I came to you, I was weak and trembled with fear, (4) and my teaching and message were not delivered with skillful words of human wisdom, but with convincing proof of the power of God's Spirit [the miracles done by Christ]. (5) Your faith, then, does not rest on human wisdom but on God's power. (6) Yet I do proclaim a message of wisdom to those who are spiritually mature. But it is not the wisdom that belongs to this world or to the powers that rule this world---powers that are soon to be gone. (Psa 37:10-11) (7) The wisdom I proclaim is God's secret wisdom, (Rom 16:25-27; Eph 1:8-10) which is hidden from the wicked, but revealed in those gaining the wisdom [salvation in Christ] God had already chosen to use for our glory even before the world was made. (8) None of the rulers of this world knew this wisdom. If they had known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. (9) But just as the scriptures say: “Eye has not seen and ear has not heard, neither have there been conceived in the heart of man the things that God has prepared for those who love him.” (Isa 64:4-5) (10) But it was to us that God made known his secret by means of his Spirit, through the words of his son Jesus. (John 6:63) The Spirit [gained through Christ's words] searches everything, even the hidden depths of God's purposes.

(8) There is no difference between the one who plants and the one who waters; God will reward each one according to the work each has done. (9) For we are partners working together for God, and you are God's field. You are also God's building. (10) Using the gift that God gave me, I did the work of an expert builder and laid the foundation, and someone else is building on it. But each of you must be careful how you build. (11) For God has already placed Jesus Christ as the one and only foundation, and no other foundation can be laid. (12) Some will use gold or silver or precious stones in building on the foundation; others will use wood or grass or straw. (13) And the quality of each person's work will be seen when the Day of Christ exposes it. For on that Day fire will reveal everyone's work; the fire will test it and show its real quality. (14) If what was built on the foundation survives the fire, the builder will receive a reward. (15) But if your work is burnt up, then you will lose it; but you yourself will be saved, as if you had escaped through the fire. (16) Surely you know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you! (17) God will destroy anyone who destroys God's temple. For God's temple is holy, and you yourselves are his temple. (18) You should not fool yourself. If any of you think that you are wise by this world's standards, you should become a fool, in order to be really wise. (19) For what this world considers to be wisdom is nonsense in God's sight. As the scripture says, "God traps the wise in their cleverness"; (20) and another scripture says, "The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are worthless." (21) No one, then, should boast about what human beings can do. Actually everything belongs to you: (22) Paul, Apollos, and Peter; this world, life and death, the present and the future---all these are yours, (23) and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God.

Does he think that I am God, with the power of life and death? It's plain that he is trying to start a quarrel with me!" (8) When the prophet Elisha heard what had happened, he sent word to the king: "Why are you so upset? Send the man to me, and I'll show him that there is a prophet in Israel!" (9) So Naaman went with his horses and chariot and stopped at the entrance to Elisha's house. (10) Elisha sent a servant out to tell him to go and wash himself seven times in the Jordan River, and he would be completely cured of his disease. (11) But Naaman left in a rage, saying, "I thought that he would at least come out to me, pray to the LORD ( יהוה ) his God, wave his hand over the diseased spot, and cure me! (12) Besides, aren't the rivers Abana and Pharpar, back in Damascus, better than any river in Israel? I could have washed in them and been cured!" (14) So Naaman went down to the Jordan, dipped himself in it seven times, as Elisha had instructed, and he was completely cured. His flesh became firm and healthy like that of a child.

(29) So we cooked my son and ate him. The next day I told her that we would eat her son, but she had hidden him!" (30) Hearing this, the king tore his clothes in dismay, and the people who were close to the wall could see that he was wearing sackcloth under his clothes.

They purposely ignore the fact that long ago God gave a command, and the heavens and earth were created. The earth was formed out of water and by water, (6) and it was also by water, the water of the flood, that the old world was destroyed. (7) But the heavens and the earth that now exist are being preserved by the same command of God, in order to be destroyed by fire [the wicked will be forever destroyed as by fire]. They are being kept for the day when godless people will be judged and destroyed.

(9) The Lord ( יהוה ) isn't slow about keeping his promises, as some people think he is. In fact, God is patient, because he wants everyone to turn from sin and no one to be lost. Please note verse 15 teaches the important thing is becoming a "New Creation." That's what faith in (and following) the words of God's Son makes you, a New Creation. (John 8:31-32) They also become the true "Israel of God" as brought out in verse 16. You can know you are part of God's New Creation, because you personally know what Jesus taught and have faith in God's promises. (Isa 11:1-12)

Romans 1:18-23 GNB ...God's anger is revealed from heaven against all the sin and evil of the people whose evil ways prevent the truth from being known. (9) Does this happiness that David spoke of belong only to those who are circumcised (natural or fleshly Israel)? No indeed! It belongs also to those who are not circumcised (Gentiles). For we have quoted the scripture, "Abraham believed God, and because of his faith God accepted him as righteous." (10) When did this take place? Was it before or after Abraham was circumcised? It was before, not after. (11) He was circumcised later, and his circumcision was a sign to show that because of his faith God had accepted him as righteous before he had been circumcised. And so Abraham is the spiritual father of all who believe in God and are accepted as righteous by him, even though they are not circumcised. (12) He is also the father of those who are circumcised, that is, of those who, in addition to being circumcised, also live the same life of faith that our father Abraham lived before he was circumcised. (13) When God promised Abraham and his descendants that the world would belong to him, he did so, not because Abraham obeyed the Law, but because he believed and was accepted as righteous by God. (14) For if what God promises is to be given to those who obey the Law, then faith means nothing and God's promise is worthless. (15) The Law brings down God's anger; but where there is no law, there is no disobeying of the law. (16) And so the promise was based on faith, in order that the promise should be guaranteed as God's free gift to all of Abraham's descendants---not just to those who obey the Law, but also to those who believe as Abraham did. For Abraham is the spiritual father of us all; (17) as the scripture says, "I have made you father of many nations." So the promise is good in the sight of God, in whom Abraham believed---the God who brings the dead to life and whose command brings into being what did not exist. (18) Abraham believed and hoped, even when there was no reason for hoping (because he had grown too old to have the son of promise), and so became "the father of many nations." Just as the scripture says, "Your descendants will be as many as the stars." (19) He was then almost one hundred years old; but his faith did not weaken when he thought of his body, which was already practically dead, or of the fact that Sarah could not have children. (20) His faith did not leave him, and he did not doubt God's promise; his faith filled him with power, and he gave praise to God. (21) He was absolutely sure that God would be able to do what he had promised. (22) That is why Abraham, through faith, "was accepted as righteous by God." (23) The words "he was accepted as righteous" were not written for him alone. (24) They were written also for us who are to be accepted as righteous, who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from death. (25) Because of our sins he was given over to die, and he was raised to life in order to put us right with God.

Romans 9:6-18 CEV ...It cannot be said that God broke his promise. After all, not all of the people of Israel are the true people of God (they are not all a "New Creation" of "spiritual Israel" or "the Israel of God" - Gal 6:12-16). (7) In fact, when God made the promise to Abraham, he meant only Abraham's descendants by his son Isaac. God was talking only about Isaac when he promised (8) (This means that the children born in the usual way are not the children of God; instead, the children born [John 3:1-8] as a result of God's promise are regarded as the true descendants.) (9) Sarah, "At this time next year I will return, and you will already have a son." (10) Don't forget what happened to the twin sons of Isaac and Rebekah. (11) Even before they were born or had done anything good or bad, the Lord told Rebekah that her older son would serve the younger one. The Lord said this to show that he makes his own choices and that it wasn't because of anything either of them had done. (12) (SEE 9:11) (13) That's why the Scriptures say that the Lord liked Jacob more than Esau. (14) Are we saying that God is unfair? Certainly not! (15) The Lord told Moses that he has pity and mercy on anyone he wants to. (16) Everything then depends on God's mercy and not on what people want or do. (17) In the Scriptures the Lord says to Pharaoh of Egypt, "I let you become king, so that I could show you my power and be praised by all people on earth." (18) Everything depends on what God decides to do, and he can either have pity on people or make them stubborn. [God's help is not a right but a gift He bestows as He chooses. Do we imagine we should direct our Creator? He is, of course, looking for any opportunity to help the righteous. (2 Chron 16:9)]
Romans 9:19-26 CEV Someone may ask, "How can God blame us, if he makes us behave in the way he wants us to?" (20) But, my friend, I ask, "Who do you think you are to question God? Does the clay have the right to ask the potter why he shaped it the way he did? (21) Doesn't a potter have the right to make a fancy bowl and a plain bowl out of the same lump of clay?" (22) God wanted to show his anger and reveal his power against everyone who deserved to be destroyed. But instead, he patiently put up with them. (23) He did this by showing how glorious he is when he has pity on the people he has chosen to share in his glory. (24) Whether Jews or Gentiles, we (those who put faith in Christ - Gal 3:26-29) are those chosen ones, (25) just as the Lord says in the book of Hosea, "Although they are not my people, I will make them my people. I will treat with love those nations that have never been loved. (26) "Once they were told, 'You are not my people.' But in that very place they will be called children of the living God."

Romans 11:13-26 GW Now, I speak to you who are not Jewish. As long as I am an apostle sent to people who are not Jewish, I bring honor to my ministry. (14) Perhaps I can make my people jealous and save some of them. (Paul was a Jew, as was Jesus) (15) If Israel's rejection (because they had no faith in Christ) means that the world has been brought back to God, what does Israel's acceptance mean? It means that Israel has come back to life. (16) If the first handful of dough is holy, the whole batch of dough is holy. If the root is holy, the branches are holy. (17) But some of the olive branches have been broken off, and you, a wild olive branch, have been grafted in their place. You get your nourishment from the roots of the olive tree. (18) So don't brag about being better than the other branches. If you brag, remember that you don't support the root, the root supports you. (19) "Well," you say, "Branches were cut off so that I could be grafted onto the tree." (20) That's right! They were broken off because they didn't believe, but you remain on the tree because you do believe. Don't feel arrogant, but be afraid. (21) If God didn't spare the natural branches, he won't spare you, either. (22) Look at how kind and how severe God can be. He is severe to those who fell, but kind to you if you continue to hold on to his kindness. Otherwise, you, too, will be cut off from the tree. (23) If Jewish people do not continue in their unbelief, they will be grafted onto the tree again, because God is able to do that. (24) In spite of the fact that you have been cut from a wild olive tree, you have been grafted onto a cultivated one. So wouldn't it be easier for these natural branches to be grafted onto the olive tree they belong to? (25) Brothers and sisters, I want you to understand this mystery so that you won't become arrogant. The minds of some Israelites have become closed until all of God's non-Jewish people are included. (26) In this way Israel as a whole (Gal 3:7-9) will be saved, as Scripture says, "The Savior (of all mankind - John 10:16; Gal 3:26-29) will come from Zion. He will remove godlessness from Jacob.
Romans 12:1-2 MWT . . . Dear friends, God is good. So I beg you use your power of reason to offer your bodies to him as a living sacrifice, pure and pleasing. That's the most sensible way to serve God. (See: John 6:28-29) (2) Don't be like the people of this world, but let God change the way you think.
