The parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector introduces us to a problem and then provides two alternative solutions.
In the parable, Jesus introduces us to a universal problem: the problem of righteousness. He then shows us two guys, each of which represents a particular solution to the problem. One solution—the outside-in approach—does not work. The other solution—the inside-out approach—does.
Let’s look at 1) the problem, 2) a solution that doesn’t work, and 3) a solution that does work.
